The Art of Fiction w/ Cleyvis Natera

This workshop is inclusive of everyone regardless of race, class, gender, age, religious beliefs, and or sexual orientation.

This four-week writing workshop instructs all writers of color, at all levels, on key aspects of the craft of fiction including point of view, dialogue, setting, and the art of escalation as a tool of the plot. The first hour will be a discussion of a craft element through lecture and analysis of a published piece. The second hour will be used to generate new work that exemplifies learned new skills and to provide feedback to each writer for improvement via revision.

Class Material: The class packet includes printouts of selected short stories that must be read ahead of the class.

The Writing Workshop is hosted by Dominican Writers Assoc., and is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Learning grant, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs & the New York State Council on the Arts in partnership with the City Council and support by Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature administered by LMCC.

About the facilitator:

Cleyvis Natera holds a Bachelor of Arts from Skidmore College and an MFA from NYU in Fiction. Cleyvis is a 2021 Peter Taylor Fellow in Fiction at the Kenyon Writers Workshop. Her past honors include writing awards and fellowships from PEN America, Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, The Juniper Institute, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation. Her writing has appeared in Time Magazine, Gagosian Quarterly, The Washington Post, The Kenyon Review, Asterix and Kweli Journal, among other publications. She currently teaches Creative Writing to MFA students at the Writer's Foundry Program at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn. Her debut novel, Neruda on the Park, is forthcoming from Penguin Random House Spring 2022.
