Details:
Dandole Banda al Machismo: Changing the Narrative of Dominican Men Through Literature is an invitation to tackle the concept of masculinity in the Dominican culture. Through personal anecdotes and writing exercises, participants will start the process of unlearning the “script” of what “a man should be like.” Participants will be presented with prompts related to the subject in discussion. They will be encouraged to share their writing with others to create a provocative and developmental discussion. Beginning the process of unlearning machismo starts by identifying the misconceptions about masculinity. This will equip writers with the necessary tools to create stories that fully capture a whole and more accurate picture of Dominican men. This is a MEN'S ONLY Workshop.
Facilitator:
Peter Núñez is a Dominican-American writer and poet born and raised in the Dominican Republic. He is currently working on his first novel, titled, A Man of Honor. Peter is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Peter’s writing mostly explores the effect of potentially traumatic experiences, such as living in poverty and undergoing abuse. His role as a mental health adviser and his own experience with mental illness is also present in his writing.
Although he may sound like a very serious guy, he is not. Peter always enjoys a good laugh and can be found anywhere where there are “chercha,” cigars, and music. He is also the guy wandering in the stacks at bookstores just for fun.
